IS/AM/ARE/WAS/WERE/BE/BEEN Without Action Verbs - Daily English Grammar and Vocabulary Lessons - Practice Conversation in English


Important Note: Most Definitions and Examples on this page have been translated into Urdu Language. People who don't speak Urdu should not pay attention to these translations. Urdu Translations have been highlighted in yellow colour.









Auxiliary verbs like "IS, AM, ARE, BE, WAS, WERE, BEEN" can be used without main verbs, which describes that status, condition, position, situation etc of a human being or other things remains as it is, remained as it was in the past or will remain stable in the future. (Urdu Meaning: Hum "IS, AM, ARE, BE, WAS, WERE, BEEN" Ko Verbs K Bager Bhi Use Karten Hen Jis Ka Matlab Hai K Kisi Bhi Insaan Ya Dosri Chezon Ki Halat Ya Jaga etc Muqarer Rehti Hai, Rehti Thi, Ya Rehe Gi)

We use “IS, AM, ARE” without verbs to express your opinion, talk about the size, weight, shape, colour and material of human beings or other things

If I pay more money, the television I chose will be bigger in size. (Urdu Meaning: Agar Mai Zyadah Pese Don Ga/Gi, Jo TV Mene Pasand Kiya Woh Size Mai Zyadah Bara Hoga)
I am tall. (Urdu Meaning: Mai Lamba/Lambi Hon)
I was tall. (Urdu Meaning: Mai Lamba/Lambi Thi)
I will be tall after 3 years. (Urdu Meaning: 3 Saal Baad Mai Lamba/Lambi Hon Gi)
Those boxes are not heavy. (Urdu Meaning: Woh Bakse Bhari Nahi Hen)

We use “IS, AM, ARE” without verbs to talk about age, taste, time, speed and other senses
I am 25 years old. (Urdu Meaning:  Mai 25 Saal Ka Hon)

We use “IS, AM, ARE” without verbs to talk about a place or position of human beings or other things
David is at the store. (Urdu Meaning: David Dukan Per Hai)

David will be at the store in the evening. (Urdu Meaning: David Sham Ko Dukan Per Hoga)

With Other Forms

  • Your plant is going to be huge after a year. (Urdu Meaning: Apka Poda 1 Saal Baad Bht Bara Hone Jarha Hai)
  • He was going to be completely bald, but he started using a good shampoo and saved his hair. (Urdu Meaning: Woh Mukamal Tor Per Ganja Hone Jarha Tha, Lekin Phir Usne Ek Acha Shampoo Istemal Karna Shuru Kiya Tha Or Apne Balon Ko Bacha Liya) 
  • She used to be a musician. (Urdu Meaning: Woh Ek Musician Hoa Karti Thi)


Sometimes we can use “GET” instead of “IS/AM/ARE” before some adjectives.

For Example:

Children are interested in playing. (Urdu Meaning: Bache Khelne Mai Interested Hen)
Children get interested in playing. (both sentences are the same)

I was busy. (Urdu Meaning: Mai Masroof Tha)
I got busy. (both sentences are the same)

We use “HAVE/HAS/HAD BEEN” without verbs to mention a time duration in which a human being or other things still continues/continued its status, condition, presence etc.

I am ill. (No Time Duration) (Urdu Meaning: Mai Bemar Hon)
I have been ill for two weeks. (Time Duration Mentioned) (Urdu Meaning: Mai 2 Hafte Se Bemar Hon)

I was ill last month. (No Time Duration) (Urdu Meaning: Mai Pichle Mahine Bemar Tha)

I had been ill for two weeks last month. (Time Duration Mentioned (Urdu Meaning: Mai Pichle Mahine 2 Hafte Tak Bemar Tha)

We use “HAVE/HAS BEEN TO SOMEWHERE” to say that a person went somewhere and came back now. (Urdu Meaning: Jab Koi Shaks Kisi Jaga Se Ho Kar Wapis Ajaye)

I have been to Canada two times. (Urdu Meaning: Mai 2 Dafa Canada Ho Kar Aa Chuka Hon)
Have you ever been to Brazil(Urdu Meaning: Kiya Ap Isse Pehle Kabhi Brazil Ja Chuke Hen?)
She has never been to any Zoo(Urdu Meaning: Woh Aj Tak Kabhi Bhi Koi Zoo Nahi Gaye Hai)
